About Ari:
Ariana Overton led a life that spanned continents and countries. Traveling the U.S., Australia and New Guinea, gave Ari a diverse catalog of characters, settings and storylines for her writing and art.
Ariana experienced life to the fullest. She was a dog trainer, a team roper in pro rodeos, the only female to ride a Harley Flathead Hog with the Hells Angels, a professional horse trainer, a database creator who lectured CEOs, a comedy radio show hostess, an author, artist, gardener and lover of ferrets.
As an author, her books garnered many awards - TRAPDOOR, THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS - EPPIE finalist 2001 and Frankfurt nominee, TAPESTRY - EPPIE finalist in 2000, GLASS HOUSE, A GLASS DARKLY and LOOKING GLASS - EPPIE finalists in 2001 and 2002 and A GIFT FOR ROO - inducted into the children's E-book hall of fame.
As an artist, she was a part of NovelBooks, Inc. family since the beginning, and served as NBI's first Art Director. Later she created many covers for Mundania Press, including their House Logo. She designed custom covers for many publishers and private clients. She was one of five finalists for the 2002 INDIE Graphic Artist Achievement award, nominated by three publishing houses, and was consistently top ten in the preditors & editors graphic artist polls. She won Best in Category awards in the EPIC Quasar competitions - two in 2002, three in 2003 and two more posthumously in 2004. The Best in Category Award has now become the Ariana Award in honor of her talent and dedication.
Ariana met her husband, Max, in Australia. After exploring the outback, the tropical rainforests, and New Guinea, they moved to the United States where they wrote, side-by-side, until her death.
A Special Message from Aaron Bryant (Ari's brother):
I will miss you Sis. I hope you and Kenny are together and feeling the love that Mom and us feel for you both. Good bye sis. Until we meet again I LOVE YOU. Your Little Brother Aaron
A Special Message from Debbie Clawson (Ari's sister):
Everyone else new my big sister as Ariana; but I have always called her "Lou". She was just 1 year older so we grew up sharing a room most of our younger years. She was always there to protect and take care of her "baby sister". She was not only my big sister but my best friend, always there when I was feeling down, or just needed someone to talk to. I can't even begin to put into words how much I miss her. I know she is still watching over me and I want her to know how much I love and Miss her! Love you Lou!!!
Messages from Friends:
Though I did not know Ari for long, I consider myself truly blessed to have been given the priviledge of calling her my friend. I will carry you in my heart forever Ari. I look to the stars, and see your smile in the Heavens. God Bless --
Beth Maher
Like so many others who have left their memories about Ariana on this list, I also knew Ari only through e-mail. Her wonderful cover of my very first novel, GUARDER LORE, left me thrilled and more excited than ever about the book's release last year. She was a very talented and good natured person, as is more than evident by all the good words contained in this Memorial. My prayers and thoughts go out to Max in this time of deep sorrow. Ari will surely be missed by many for a long, long time. - Shawn P. Madison
I have never met Ariana, but I'm a huge fan of her work. I even joined an MSN group where she had uploaded her cover art. I spent hours drooling over the delicious illustrations Ariana had produced, wondering about the kind of magical person who could create such wonderful visions. God bless both Ariana and her beloved Max. -
Wendy Peterson
She sounds very much like a dear friend of mine who went to The Beyond almost two years ago. It took me a year to delete her e-mail address from my list. I still miss her bright spirit and always will, so I understand what Ariana's friends and family feel. Life goes on, but oh how you miss that lovely person. Our only consolation is that someday, somewhere, we will all be together again. - Rosemary Longworth/Jane LaFey
Ari was always friendly, always a pleasure to talk to, even though I only ever managed it via email. She was a good writer and a person who enriched people's lives with her presence. -
Steve Mazey
May you have peace, security and good circumstances on your next great adventure. - Darragha
Ari was always encouraging, kind, funny, helpful. She was a lady of talent beyond belief. When I sent her my idea for a cover blurb for my book, she E-mailed back, "BEE U TEE FULL" which is how I will always think of her. Max, I envy you every moment you spent with that incredible woman. -
Shel Damsky
Max, my condolences to you and your family at this time. You can be proud of what she achieved and take comfort in the fact that Ari touched many lives, and her spirit will live on through those whom she touched. - Wendy Laing
Although I never met Ari, the posts on EPIC prompted me to visit this site and read the many tributes to a fine lady. I can see that Ari did touch many lives and I can only say that when my time comes, I hope I receive such a heartfelt tribute. My sympathy to Max during this very sad time. Just keep in mind that a new angel dwells in heaven! -

FOR ARI
Cerulean blue, magenta, burnt ember,
Colors of spring, of sun, and November,
The artist's eye, observant and true,
White page to masterpiece, perfection pursued,
Heart's inspiration, the need to create,
Mind's eye to fingertips, God's real estate,
A memory, an image, capture the time,
A face, an emotion, talent sublime.
Mixed media of smiles, of dreams, and of tears,
Of birdsong and starlight and friends far and near,
Her work speaks her name for all to treasure,
A gift such as this is wealth beyond measure.
- Lynn Hanna 11/8/03
Romantic Times BookClub Magazine offers its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Ari Overton, who was so appreciated in life and will be missed. I suggest that an annual award be presented in her name for web site/cover designs in the e-book/small press community. -
Kathryn Falk, Lady of Barrow
Goodbye to a dear friend. Though I never had the pleasure of meeting Ari in person I counted her as my friend. I was so looking forward to that "Big Hug" she promised me when we were to meet in Oklahoma City for the first time. Who knows, maybe our trails will yet cross one day. Until then, Adios, Amigo! - Dusty Rhodes
Earth's loss is heaven's gain. May your beautiful creativity and spirit comfort your loved ones as you live on their memories and in their hearts. -
Selena Robins
Ari and I did the screenplay adaptation of her Glass House Trilogy Series together. We shared the same dream and I will miss her terribly. There are no words that can express my sadness. My prayers go out to Max. - Dan Guardino
The Powers That Be are rejoicing this night as they welcome home their sister's spirit. May her family find peace in the knowledge that only her body is gone. Her spirit will continue on forever. -
Daine Tugman
I was so lucky to have had design all of my book covers and to edit my latest novel, 1863 SARATOGA SUMMER. I will miss all our long phone calls, the jokes we shared and the comradeship we had.
I first noticed her on Epic when she spoke her mind and everyone jumped all over her. Yet, despite the adversarial comments, she held her head high and behaved like the wonderful gal she was. She taught me more about e-pubbing in those early days and supported my hopes and dreams.
She had hoped to come East to visit in the Spring or Summer and stay over at my house for a bit. Max-her invitation is yours as well and Shel and I hope to meet with you. - Dorice Nelson
I'll miss Ari. She was a strong, vibrant, interesting woman whom I admired very much. She leaves behind an empty space, and I'm sad to say good-bye. -
Jennifer Macaire
I think everything said in these tributes so far describes Aria to a "T." She was an extraordinarily gifted artist, a heck of a nice lady with a great sense of humor and one who faced her challenges with dignity and optimism even while counting her blessings. Ari, thank you for the gift of the cover for my first book, and thank you for the gift of your insights during the brief time I knew you. - Erica DeQuaya
Spread your wings, Ari, buoyed by the rising power of all the blessings you have lavished upon everyone. We weep for our loss, even though we know your spirit soars free. -
Arline Chase
Ari called me her friend, many times. She is responsible for starting me on my newest career, that of editor. She was my teacher and mentor, and my world is a worse place for her passing. We had plans to cooperate on a book about cancer. Alas, she will now never make her contribution. Ari has finished with this life, and moved on. Farewell. - Dr. Bob Rich
Ariana was an extremely talented lady. Her cover art was memorable and beautiful. She will be sorely missed in the digital cover art field. My sympathies to her husband for his great loss. May you rest in peace Ariana. -
Christine Poe
I met Ariana through Clocktower Books. She was the first to read my novel and was instrumental in having it published. Even after I broke from Clocktower, Ariana continued to help me try to find another publisher. She was a wonderful woman and even though I never met her in person, I felt that she was a friend through the emails she wrote to me. I have several of her books and was so impressed and thrilled that such a talented woman thought my book was worth something. Ariana, you will be missed. Max, my prayers are with you. - Kim Mitchell
I only knew Ari through emails--always peppy, peppery and to the point. The last were exchanged just a few weeks ago due to a post she made on the EPIC list that I applauded. I feel like I lost a sister who was parted from me at birth before I had a chance to really know her. There has to be a new star up there in the night's dark sky; probably a super-nova for her. My heart goes out to Max and those truly close to this wonderful lady who will be missed by so many whose lives she touched in special ways. Thank God bits of her diverse talents will stay with us awhile along with special memories. -
Gaye Walton "AzGaye"
I did not know Ari and have not read her books, but any death saddens me. I believe she was in some of the Yahoo groups I belong to and I will miss seeing her post. - Mary Ann Johnson
I've never met Ari, and the same goes for Max, but I have empathy for both of them. I've admired Ari's covers for as long as I've been buying books from NBI.
Max, All the messages should tell you how many people will miss Ari. Try and keep your chin up in this difficult time. -
William Bachman
I have known Ari since 1980. But to me and my family she was simply one of our dearest friends. A rowdy redhead who knew more ways to have fun than anyone we had ever met. We didn't live in each other's back pocket, but we were the closest of friends. To me she wasn't the author or artist. She was simply Bugsy, my absolute best friend in the world....I saw her three weeks ago and we were planning all of the things we were going to do when we got really old. Now we have to wait till I get to Heaven.... There is a new star in the sky tonight, and if you look really, really close; It's dancing NAKED! Godspeed my friend....... - Karen Kirkland
Ari was one of the first persons to offer me a kindness back in 2000 when I was getting my feet wet with POD books. She offered to read and review my novel, KING OF HARLEM, if I did the same for DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS. She wrote a wonderful review that is still up at Amazon.com and B&N.com. Recently she was kind enough to offer me advice about small publishers, which has proven invaluable. I only had the opportunity to email her a few times, but she did me a great favor, and I will always be grateful to her. She was a fine writer, and, if my brief association with her counts for anything, I know she was a fine human being. As a regular lurker of many of the writer e-groups Ari belonged to, I do know one thing for sure: she loved writing and she loved writers. She will be missed. Rest in peace, wonderful lady. -
Steven Philip Jones
Like Miles, I met Ari when she worked with me on my Clocktower books. And one wonderful weekend a year or so ago, she and Max spent a couple of days at my home. The thing that struck me then was how much in love the two of them were. They were definitely soul mates, and I can only imagine how lost Max will be without her. Actually, we've all lost something, a woman who unselfishly gave of her time and talent to so many of us. I feel as though I've lost a part of my family, and I have. I'm just glad that if she had to leave us so soon, she went in her sleep, peacefully.
Ari, my friend, I'll miss you, but I know I'll see you again someday, and it won't surprise me one bit if your wings are trimmed with solid gold. So here's a toast, just as you asked: To Arianna Overton. Simply the best. - Beth Anderson
From our lives to God's hands. Goodbye Ariana. Goodbye for now. - Glesa
Our first introduction to one another was when I was asked to do a cold read for Ari before one of her books went to press. A pleasure and a delightful read.
Ari was such a whirlwind. Always had a project going....and yet never too busy to help or give encouragement to others.
Her life has touched so many. Not only will she be greatly missed by all...for some, there will be a void no one else can ever fill.
My heart and sincere sympathy goes out to her soul mate, Max, and to her daughter and family for their loss. I wish also to extend my heartfelt wishes to Ari's extended family--Penny, Moni, Linnea--YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. "The sisterhood" who held hands as they walked through the fire together. - Carole Ann Lee
What a special and talented lady Ari was. When she designed the cover for The Cinderella Curse, I told her I loved it--and it was just perfect. She wrote back and said I was an author. Didn't I know I wasn't supposed to love the first thing the artist gave me, lol. She always had an encouraging word, either to give you a boost when was needed, or just to make the day brighter. I was wrong. She is STILL a special lady, only just in our hearts now. -
Dee S. Knight
I was proud to call Ari my friend and greatly admired her talent, tenacity, and wit. We worked together and what a joy that was. She will be missed. - Maryann Miller
Everything I've heard about you, Ari, has been good, and I know you will be missed. And remembered. Hugs and prayers to your family. -
Robin Bayne
Ari gave of her heart from a spirit that reached out to touch those in the land "Downunder". She excited from the spirit of "Dreaming", from the ancient land she loved, Australia. Her spirit will always walk this sacred land, through the "Glass House Trilogy". Ari would often rush the words, "Go for it Hon!" when dreams reached for the "Unreachable Stars". I thank God that I met Ari, and this Aussie author/editor will always cherish the friendship she gave without hesitation. - Pamela Faye
I met Ari at the EPIC conference in Omaha. What a delightful person, even when I woke her up at 5:30 in the morning to beg a favor! She was one of those rare souls a person couldn't help but like instantly. It was my pleasure to know her. I'll miss her messages on EPIC. My sincere condolences to Max and Dani and the rest of the family. -
Ginny McBlain
While we never met, Ari's forthright honesty and willingness to stand up for what she believed helped me make some difficult decisions in my professional career. We didn't always see eye to eye, but Ari never faulted anyone for disagreeing with her. She will be missed, but never forgotten. - Cindy Vallar
Without knowing Ari well, I thought of her as a friend because in all my contacts with her she acted like one. I have her marvelous covers on two of my books. As an artist, she knew what was needed and provided a great cover even when I couldn't describe exactly what I wanted. Her books were equally good. No one can replace her. -
Jane Toombs
Despite my self-imposed exile in China, I still know a few people in the US who I think of as friends. Though I only met her by email, Ari was one of them. I wonder if she knew that, since it seemed all I ever did was fight with her, but she was very special. She most definitely shall be missed. - Michael LaRocca
The truly kind enrich the lives of everyone they touch. Ari was one of them. -
Jude Glad
Although I only spoke directly to Ari via email on a few occasions, her determination and forthright personality were obvious. Her covers were truly beautiful and I always looked forward to seeing what she would come up with next. Peace be with you, Max, in this difficult time. - Elaine Corvidae
Never met the lady, but we did have some email contact. She has left a large hole in the epub business. Max, just keep smiling. She would have liked that. -
Gini Wilson
I only new Ariana through emails but she touched my heart from the first word I read in that first email. When I was down at one time, just recently, she was the first to email me off list and express her concern, encourage me to be strong, shed the tears that needed to be shed and we chatted a lot that day. She seemed larger than life, she made me smile and she left her mark on my heart and her words of wisdom will live forever with me. Ariana Overton was an amazing woman, and though I didn't get to know her very well, I am humbled by the fact that she chose to write to a stranger and make my day. Soar with the Angels Ariana, you will be deeply missed and always remembered. - Tracey West
When I first began designing art for book covers, I wrote to Ariana for some help and sent her a link to view my work. She was most encouraging. After looking at my work, she said I didn't need any help. I will never forget her for saying that. I am shocked and saddened to hear of Ariana's passing. My prayers and thoughts to her family. -
Diane Donald
Only a couple of weeks ago, I asked Ari to design the cover for the re-issue of 'Listen To The Shadows', and as ill as she was feeling, she did it for me. "Don't worry, hon," she said in her email to me. "We'll come up you something you'll like." And she did. That's the kind of person she was - warm, generous and giving. You'll be terribly missed, Ari. - Joan Hall Hovey
Dear Ari, I regret never getting to meet you in person. But the few emails we exchanged were full of encouragement and kindness. You will be forever missed. You can now paint the beauties of heaven without pain. You were deeply loved and left your mark on many. Max, may God be with you through this loss. -
Betty S. La Pierre
I met Ari while putting together the Crumbs in the Keyboard Project. Her effervescence about the Crumbs project was pivotal in getting it off the ground. Her patient tenacity to get the cover "just right" and her encouragement that all the obstacles confronting Crumbs was well worth what we had in this project. I will always think of her fondly for that. Her generosity and caring as an author who loved life and all that she was involved in will continue to inspire me. Peace to you Max, Ari has touched so many-she lives on in each of us that she's inspired.
Here is evidence of what I mean in Ari's own words, taken from her essay called," It Never Really Occurred To Me." from Crumbs in the Keyboard.
"I've done my best and given freely, openly, and with a full heart. And it's come back to me many times over. I'm a happy woman." ~ Ariana Overton, 2002, Crumbs in the Keyboard.
Indeed, Ari has taught us well what is important. - Pamela Johnson
An entire list of words comes to mind about Ari: sassy, zany, free-spirited, generous, compassionate, steadfast, loyal, determined, honorable, outspoken, and intuitive. She did not suffer fools but she embraced the world. She let you know you were unique in her eyes -- she had a penchant for bestowing nicknames on her friends. Mine was Bop and even now she chides me, Aw, Bop, don't cry.
Her emails were as unique as her voice. Her husky laugh on the phone became a wonderful *SNICKER* in her missives. She was quick to rant and ramble; she was even quicker to offer unending sympathy or support.
She helped me bumble my way through Photoshop, as I worked cover art side-by-cyber-side with her. I was trying to teach her Poser, but even last week she was still emailing me requests for 'one more nekkid man' (or fantasy clad or diaphanously clothed gal) -- though she'd always assure me Max was the best nekkid man she'd ever found.
And then, invariably, she would send out her 'just because you're my friend' missives. One of her more recent, dated Sept. 29, ended with: Life is too short...Dance Naked!
Dance naked among the stars, my friend. I will miss you. -
Linnea Sinclair
I first met Ari when I was teaching mystery writing for Painted Rock Writer's Colony and she was one of my students for all of my five different writing courses. She was eager, enthusiastic about writing and held a zest for life that was catching. I had the special honor of sitting next to her at the EPIC Conference Book signing in 2000 and we shared some wonderful moments together. Just last month she designed a wonderful bookmark for me and I'll treasure it forever. She is truly an angel in heaven and I hope to see her again. - Diana Kirk
I'm brushing away the tears as I write. It seems only yesterday Ari and I talked and talked about the future of e-books here in Omaha at our first EPIC conference. I've corresponded with her ever since. We'd already discussed the next conference, hoping she could come to Oklahoma City. She was a joy and marvelous person to call "friend". She always told you the truth, and always with love in her heart. A light in my life has gone out. Dear Max, we will all miss her. She was delighted and thrilled with her life with you. Hold that thought closely, as you manage through the coming days. Hugs and tears. -
Connie Crow
I knew Ari, briefly as I was just joined the Liquid Silver team. She was feisty, and zany and I gotta love that in a girl! May the brilliance of your soul forever shine, the beauty of your cyber-presence forever reign. With love. - Dakota Cassidy
Everyone was "luv" or "hon" to Ari. I never had the honor of meeting her, but feel I knew her... just a little. Ari, hon, we miss you already. -
Susanne Marie Knight
I was fortunate enough to experience Ari's wit and inspiration when she joined our BooksWeLove family this past year. And, in fact, The BWL logo is another example of her generosity. Ari and I had worked through the weekend designing her page at BWL, when she sent me one last image. I opened it up, wondering where on earth I was going to put it, and there was our gorgeous BooksWeLove logo. This was Ari's gift to our membership, and in her memory Ari's author page will have a permanent home at BooksWeLove. - Jude Morris
Ari I knew so briefly and yet feel like I knew her forever. Her warmth as a human being and her cover art, her legacy will live on through her art and our memories. My prayers go for strength and courage to Max and Ari's family. I'll miss her too. Heaven is a little brighter tonight. -
Billie A Williams
I never met Ari in person, but as her publisher we had conversed many times by email. Fortunately for me, we only became author/publisher after having spent quite a time as friends.
She was thrilled to get "A Gift For Roo" published and I am so glad that she got to see it.
Ari also agreed to come and stay at my house next year when she was going to come over to do the movie for her book. I wish she had lived to see that happen. I was looking forward to meeting her in person.
Many times a publisher doesn't get the chance to become friends with all their authors, but this was one person that was so outgoing, friendly and helpful that I bet ALL her publishers considered her a personal friend - she was just that kind of person.
She will be greatly missed by many people, and I know she touched many lives.
Ari, may you rest in peace. - Sandy Cummins
I'm sitting here crying. What can I say? I've known Ari since the beginnings of e-publishing. We considered ourselves cyber-survivors along with a few others of our precious cyber-sisters. We, and Ari more than most, did what we could to help other new authors who were trying to find their way in what can be an overwhelming and sometimes disheartening business.
Ari always told it like it was. No sugar-coating, no platitudes, no excuses. What you saw on the e-mails, was what you got. Often, her honesty got her into trouble. She'd shrug the nay-sayers' comments off; she realized the truth never really hurt anybody, just stung for a while.
Ari survived more than one e-publisher. She just kept on keeping on. She believed in her writing and her art.
She had a right to do so. Her covers are some of the best on the web; her books have always been highly acclaimed and nominated. She never won, but she kept on doing what she loved most -- telling stories.
She generously created new covers for both my books when I found myself out on the streets with no publisher after a very bad experience. The current covers for Death Benefits and Fatal Vision were the results of her love for me. I just opened my e-mail one day and there they were -- in perfect living color. A week later she sent me written releases to all the rights in the covers. Ari was a very giving person.
Besides being a cyber-survivor, she was a survivor in life. Her younger days were hell on earth. She survived cancer with humor and grace. She suffered from back problems that resulted in multiple surgeries and the emotional side effects that went with being chronically ill. She was always just this side of being indigent. Yet, she still gave of herself to her friends; refusing to take money for the covers she so generously created.
She is survived by one of the warmest and nicest men I've ever met -- Max Overton. He has lost his partner, his other half. I can't begin to know how he must feel.
Knowing Ari, she's watching over me now -- laughing at what I'm writing, making a joke. But she knows I loved her as a special friend, a sister. I'm so sad that I could not do more to ease her burden in this world. I hope she is now at peace -- she deserves it.
A toast for Ari -- Be happy, dear friend. You will be missed. -
Moni Draper
Ari gave me the greatest of gifts, her talent. She did the cover for my novel, A Society Wedding. In it, she put her time, her attention to detail, and a piece of herself that I will cherish always. - M Graham-Waldenville
God bless you, Ari. Though I never met you, it has been clear to me that you are (I can't say 'were') one of those vital, larger-than-life people that often make life so meaningful. I've looked forward to meeting you at a con some day. From the number of heartfelt tributes on this site, it is obvious that you will be deeply missed. All my sympathies to Max. Your creative partnership will continue to be inspiring. -
John B. Rosenman
I'm not an author so I can't put this in pretty words: I'm doing cover artwork, in great part, due to Ari's doing. While we did not see eye to eye sometimes, she was always generous with her time and experience. To her beloved husband, my heart goes out to you. She leaves a great void and she will be missed. - Nathalie Moore
Though I never met Ari personally, the news of her passing has brought tears to my eyes. Her e-mails were always so "full of life," energetic and passionate, and I so envied her for that. I'm not sure even she realized just how many lives she'd touched just by making herself available. Lives of people she'd never met or even communicated with directly. People who basked in the warmth of her direct and giving nature, yet had never told her just how much they admired her and her work. She will be deeply missed. -
Kathryn Blake
I didn't know Ari personally but I do know what a talented artist she is. Having bought books from NBI, I have quite a few of the books she did. These books hold a place on my keeper shelf but now I will treasure them even more. My heart goes out to you Max. I will keep you in my prayers. God and his angels are taking care of Ari. - Judy Leigh Peters
Ari has been a friend for many years now. My daughter Rebecca is the face of Roo in Ari's children's books. We are both so shocked and saddened at the loss such a kind and generous person. Our sincere condolences and love go to Max and family. -
Frances and Rebecca
Like so many others, I didn't really know her except through NBI and e-mail, but she spread joy and light like the tail of a comet. My sympathy to Max and the rest of Ari's family. - Liz Flaherty
Although I didn't get to know you personally, I remember wonderful e-mail conversations. Rest in peace. -
Sherry Wille
I wish I had had the opportunity to know her better, but in my brief contact with her she was very professional. Her artwork is lovely to behold. She will be missed. - Kimberly Chapman
While I didn't know Ari personally, I always admired her spunk, her enthusiasm, and her numerous talents. Not everyone lives their lives to the fullest, but I could always see that Ari did. She lived what she believed. Few people can say they are true to themselves, but I think she truly took life by the horns and rode it into the sunset. May Ari rest in peace. -
Denise A. Agnew
Ari is the reason I'm published. She acquired my first novel for Clocktower, worked with me on the cover design, and then continued her encouragement and support, bringing into the NovelBooks fold. A great soul has rejoined the infinite. See you on the other side, darling. - Miles Archer
Ari designed the cover for my first novel, and I was thoroughly impressed with her caring nature and her willingness to work with me through three revisions to come up with the best cover I could imagine for my work. When I needed artwork for advertising, she was there, always willing to help even under short notice. When she expressed her opinions, she did so from the heart. She was a champion for others even when they did not know it. Although I only knew her on-line, she seemed to me to be one of the most forthright and honest people I have met in my adventures as an author and fellow NBI writer. Max, you were truly blessed to have Ari in your life. I will miss her. -
Cindy Procter-King
Ari designed four of my NBI book covers. There were times where, amid a flurry of emails dotted with Ari's usual *SNICKER* and *S*, draft after draft was tweaked and twisted and spun on its ear until we were both happy with the final product. In one case, a design element that Ari added actually inspired me to add a minor character to the book. The court jester and I thank you, Ari. Your "hugs" will be missed. - Linda Bleser
Friend was a special word to Ari. I'm glad she called me one. I'll miss her. - JennaKay Francis
Ari and I emailed back and forth last week and I had no idea how badly she must have been feeling. When other women talk about how much their husbands get on their nerves, Ari had only the best things to say about Max. He was dear to her above all other things. My prayers go out to him and the rest of the family.
Thank you Ari for the cover for IN HEAT, your last for Liquid Silver, and the cover for the Bedtimes Anthology - I will think of you every time I see them. - Leigh Wyndfield
Ari, Your art, writing talent and kindness will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers will be for Max as he goes through the next days and weeks. God bless you both. -
Sue Sweet
Ariana Overton is one most generous people I have ever known. I met her for the first time at the Omaha EPICon. She and Pat Rasey were kind enough to do my workshop when I ended up in the hospital and Ari's daughter became my angel-in-waiting and took over from Sue Charnley's vigil in the emergency room. Ari was fiercely loyal to her friends, too, and fearless about most everything.
Ari created the cover for MIDNIGHT INTENTIONS and refused one thin dime. She created the hubba-hubba bookmarks that have been so popular with readers. She was a creative, beautiful soul and I will miss her beyond what words can express. I was honored to call her friend. I will miss her presence in this world, but she will always live on the hearts of those who love her so very much. - Michele R. Bardsley
What can I say about Ari that hasn't already been said. She was a big inspiration for me and Mundania Press. She designed our logo, did many of our covers and we are happily publishing her books. I delighted in the fact that I was able to put her book GLASS HOUSE into her hands as her first hardcover. She was very tickled.
Due to health problems I missed my opportunity to meet her and Max in person with Linda and Moni in Indianapolis. I'll always regret it but we talked on the phone and corresponded by mail almost daily so I really came to know and like her.
Now she gets to paint some of God's magnificent sunsets. -

Ari was a wonderfully talented writer and artist and she leaves behind pieces of her heart and soul in her many glorious works. I am so shocked and saddened by the news of her passing. She always gave me words of encouragement and will be missed. My thoughts, sympathies and prayers go out to her family and I thank her spirit for all the lives she touched and made better. Goodbye, Ari. May you beautify Heaven as you did Earth. - Howard Hopkins
I didn't know Ari well, but I'm still sad at her passing. She did a beautiful cover for MOON OF LITTLE WINTER and captured my story perfectly with her art.
DO NOT CRY
Do not cry
I did not die
I'm the quiet whisper
on the wind
The soft touch
of an angel's wings
The voice that calls
in your dreams
Do not cry
I did not go
I'm the gentle peace
of a light snowfall
The lulling rhythm
of a steady rain
The cool ruffle
of an ocean breeze
Do not cry
Close your eyes
and you'll see me
On a far away shore
in that land of no more tears

Ari created my first 'real' website for me and designed my banner ad for Down Came a Blackbird. She also designed the cover for my second book, Covenants.
Even though I never met her in person, her gracious emails reflected her wonderful and patient personality. She was a gifted writer, a talented artist and a shining light who guided me as a newbie in the e-publishing business. - Barbara T. Karmazin
Ari and I met online about 6 years ago on the Australian author's list. We became friends fast and often chatted till early hours of the morning. We critiqued each other's work, shared art ideas, talked about personal things and shared the same beliefs. We both went through bad times together and supported one another. Though we both became too busy to chat often and for so many hours, we always remained friends. She'll be sorely missed by me and many others. Max, please know that in spirit she'll always be with you. - Martine Jardin aka Tina Haveman
Ari was an incredibly talented artist, be it in her writing or her art. She will be sadly missed, but then, I can imagine the wonderful beauty she will bring to the next world. God must have needed heaven to be decorated by the creative Ari. - Miriam van Veen
Even though I never met Ari in person, she taught me so much... It was her keen eye and insight that made THE BLOOD THAT BINDS into a "real" book. Her cover for that novel captures it for me perfectly. It was her encouragement that added 5,000 words to THE LUTE AND THE LIAR, some of the best stuff in it. Again, she created a stunning cover for me. I had contacted her just last week about the possibility of doing a custom cover for "Sidhe Moves Through the Faire", and I was to get back to her with more details. She was talking of retiring, and said my cover would be one of her last. Ari designed my logo of quill, ink and book. She had been there for me ever since I started this "professional writer" gig. I will miss her a great deal.... -

I was touched by Ari's generosity. After I critiqued a story for her, she thanked me with new cover art for my book, at no charge. I know her spirit and enthusiasm will stay with us, even if she's given up her "earth suit." Much love to you, sweetie, in the peaceful beyond. - Vanessa Hart
One my heroines is named Arianna (mine has two "n's" instead of one). I had chosen the name before I met Ari on-line way back in the old Romance Foretold days. After she read a little bit about my character, she decided that she liked having the character named for her. She created some very nice covers. I could always tell which ones where hers without looking for the artist's name. -

I knew Ari by e-mail and never in person, but she was a dear friend and supportive inspiration when Linda and I set out to publish a time travel after turning down a contract at another publishing house. That book is coming out in January 2004, and I know Ari will be cheering us on in another realm.
Max and all those who dearly loved Ari, please let me say that the memories you have, permanent snapshots on the brain, and the photos and memorabilia you saved about her, will be a warm glow with you for many years to come. She's still with all of us, and I cherish the fact I could call her my friend.
Some of you may not know, but I write inspirational poetry as well as books and short stories. One of my poems came to mind and I'd like to post it here for Ari and for all of you so you can appreciate how important and precious each moment of life really is.
FOOTPRINTS IN SAND
Don't forget moments
That pass at a glance,
For those are the moments
That make your heart dance.
Many years later,
You'll think back on days
Still making you smile
Through pictures you saved.
The first love you dated,
The person you wed,
The baby you cradled,
The friends known, now dead,
The dog that you raised,
Though puppies are rough,
Those footprints in sand,
You captured with love.
- Bobbye Terry
I will always remember Ari and I sitting side by side, holding hands on bated breath...waiting for the announcement of winner in the thriller category for the very first EPPIES. Neither of us took home that beautiful trophy, but I met a wonderful person and confidant that day. God Bless you and keep you, Ari...rest with the angels. -

Ari designed the beautiful cover for my Awe-Struck book, "Vanessa." She was also part of the NBI experience. I love her work. She was always kind and generous with her time and shared her experience with us all. And now no-one will call me "cupcake." I'll miss you, Ari. - Lynne Connolly
I am proud that Ari called me friend. She was a remarkable woman rich in generosity, kindness, talent, strength and courage, with a wicked sense of humor. I'll miss you, Ari. -

I had the pleasure of speaking with Ariana on many occasions. I'm one of those horrid people who always have a million questions about everything and the thing I remember about her was how patient she always was with me as I asked my million and one questions.
She had a good heart, emailing me a while back when things weren't going so well and letting me know she was thinking about me.
She'll truly be missed. - Lori Soard
Since this morning when I first checked my morning email, my life has changed. Today I lost a friend, someone who has touched my life in so many different ways, I can not begin to express. I can not stop the tears from flowing or my heart from aching, but I welcome it as I need to grieve so that I can begin to heal.
Ariana was the first author to come to me nearly five years ago with her work. At the time I hadn't even decided for sure I was opening a publishing company but I had fallen in love with the e-publishing industry and saw the potential for talented authors. I was only publishing a newsletter at the time and doing reviews. I couldn't figure when she first contacted me if she wanted a review or was looking for a publisher. Subsequently she did go with another publisher, but we became friends from there and it only grew over the years.
Outspoken, oh yes, very. But how I loved her for it. No way would she withhold what she thought and most of the times, she was spot on with what she said. Passionate...without a doubt, for the industry, for the craft of writing, for the creation of art. Her stories stirred my heart, her art blew me away and I never ceased to tell her this.
For a long time she created my covers for me and when we opened Liquid Silver, she jumped in there too along with trying her hand at some spicy romance. How she'd laugh when she said what fun she was having writing PORTAL, and how much fun her and Max had as a result. Oh, her lovely and loving husband Max, such a dear, such a gentle man.
So many of the dear friends I have made via the Internet, I haven't met. However, this past summer I finally had the opportunity to meet in person Ari and Max when they were visiting in Indianapolis. And a month later I visited once again with them when I was in St. Louis. How precious these two times are now for me. The twinkle in her bright blue eyes, her quick and lovely smile are embedded in my heart.
She always talked about her wonderful love affair with her husband Max. I am so glad I was able to see this very visible bond between these two dear people. You read his devotion to her in his eyes; you saw the love in hers. I do not know how Max could be feeling now, but all my love, support and any help I can give is surely his.
I've been reading various posts today on lists and realizing once again how many, many people Ari touched in her life. I realize too how many book covers she has created for so many so I know her art, her talent and her love for so many people is spread to great distances.
I lost my dear, dear friend today, yet I know she won't have much patience with my tears and sadness. She won't want that from me, she won't want that from any of her friends. I am taking today to grieve, to cry, to feel the loss and pain. I then will work toward celebrating her life, our friendship and all that she gave to me which so enriched my life.
I will not be surprised that in the not so distant future when looking at a particular gorgeous sunset or sunrise, I'll see etched in the heavens, "Sky by Ari".
I lift a glass in toast to Ari, my friend. May you be happy and find peace. I will always miss you. -
Linda Eberharter
Bon Voyage, Ari. May your travels continue to be as interesting as they were in life. You have left your mark on this world. - Ed Teja
Ari combined a wicked wit with to-the-core kindness. She was an outstanding artist, an outstanding author, an outstanding person. I'll miss her. -

Ari and I were on the Australian romance writers mailing list together for a time and both had stories in Between the Sheets. We also worked together briefly on Disceptatio, and I remember doing a last-minute copy edit on Trapdoor, at one point. She was a wonderful person to work with, kind to me personally, and an excellent writer. My condolences to Max and the family. - Elizabeth
I met Ari on one of the Yahoo lists. I commented on her name, as one of my daughter's names is Ariana. I sent the group the pictures of my little girls and she became their honorary grandmother. We had even discussed a children's book for my girls in the style of a GIFT FOR ROO. What is so very sad and odd about this is last night the girls got their school pictures and we had cut out pics for Ariana. So, to hear this news first thing this morning was even more of a shock. I am so pleased to hear of Ariana's wishes. My best wishes, hugs and love to Max and family. -

I met Ari in Omaha at the EPPIE conference and spent a long evening chewing the fat. We kept in touch in a sporadic fashion. Enjoyed her books, especially Devil In The Details. She did the cover for one of my books. Out-spoken, she was but always kind. - Janet Lane Walters
Ari was very talented and dedicated to those she served. She was so helpful and did all she could to make the work perfect. I will cherish the two Civil War book covers she did for me, and will feel an emptiness for the third cover she was not able to do. -
Lauralee
Ari was one of the first people to offer her shoulder when I was going through the worst time of my career. She encouraged me and challenged me. Without her support, I wouldn't be doing what I am today. She was a co-survivor (and only a few of us know what that means exactly.) Ari was with me at the beginning of NovelBook's inception. I can't even begin to imagine what NBI will be like without her. Ari was gifted with many talents, and shared them all with everyone. She was honest and forthright, and never pulled her punches. You knew exactly where you stood with Ari. She will be remembered as a teacher, an author, an artist, and a dear friend. Peace, my sister. - Penny Hussey
Ari designed both covers for my novel. I'll always remember her kindness and willingness to do whatever it took to get the images just the way I'd envisioned them. Her enthusiasm, dedication, and friendship will live forever in my heart. -

A wonderful talent, a wonderful lady. - Stewart Thomas
