The Golden King

The Golden King majestically illuminates a time in history that was characterized by contrasts, conflicts and wholehearted commitments.

Author Max Overton knows how to write a great story. Readers will be transported to the lands of the ancient Scythians where the clash of battle swords mixes with cries of pain and the stench of death. The story is gritty with realistic encounters of enemy tribesmen. Yet, the author has also captured the contrasts that existed. While bloodshed and death were ever-present among these people, love and loyalty existed in equal parts. The author successfully portrayed both sides of the warriors. Yes, it was a time of unspeakable violence, but the battles were fought for honor and ideals.

The Golden King is a shining example of historical fiction!

When I reviewed Max Overton's Lion of Scythia, I was impressed by the depth of historical research, the authenticity of the writing. The plot was well thought out and interesting. The Golden King has all the strengths of its predecessor, with none of the weaknesses. The characters have become strong, vivid and rounded; dialogue is true to life and easily distinguishes the main players from each other. The tension is unremitting.

Anyone who likes historical adventure will love this book.

Max Overton thoroughly researched Alexander the Great and his times, and it shows in this impressive book. He focuses on Nikometros, an officer in Alexander's cavalry, and his relationship with Tomyra, a Scythian priestess. All does not go smoothly, in love or war, and the battle rages not only in life, but in his heart and loyalties as well.

The book is more than a love story. Politics, battles, the hack/slash and carnage of war in ancient times are shown in all their gutsy glory. You are on the battlefield with Niko, in the cold, and you thirst when he does. An excellent portrayal of a warrior with a lover's heart.
